Born in a Thai family in Thailand and having received formal education (which includes learning norms of the Thai writing system), she acquired Thai as her first language and is fully proficient in it.
Upon immigrating to Hong Kong, she is immersed in a Cantonese-speaking societal environment. She listened to how people spoke in the streets and in addition practiced using the bits and pieces of Cantonese linguistic features known to her with her family. At the beginning, when she did not have enough proficiency to communicate with her her mother-in-law and other people in Cantonese alone, they would code-mix and use simple English lexicon to aid their expression of ideas but she quickly picked up Cantonese and no longer needed to rely on code-mixing to express herself. She has attained near-native Cantonese oral communication skills and can understand quite many local slangs. She also possesses limited Cantonese literacy skills required for practical uses - she can read essential Cantonese words her part-time job required her to (e.g. reading the ingredients of glutinous rice dumplings of different flavours) after some time of rote-learning and can recognize Chinese numerals for the purpose of playing mahjong.

She knows quite some simple, everyday English phrases which, however, are enforced only through rote auditory memory. Thus, it is not considered that she has enough language competence to utilize English as a second language.

Currently, her most frequently used language is Cantonese, which is used at home with her daughters and in social and work settings while Thai is used moderately high at home (as the main language used to communicate with her husband who is fluent in it), in social domain, and for her own entertainment and leisure (e.g. playing video games, accessing information on the Internet, and watching dramas and films).
